The first question when reading a chart is always: which planet sits where. That starts with knowing the nine planets, the Navagraha. Before you get into houses, aspects, or dashas, you need to understand what each graha represents and why it matters.
The nine planets
Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu: these nine are counted in Vedic astrology. Rahu and Ketu aren’t physical planets. They’re the two points where the Moon’s orbital path crosses the Sun’s apparent path (the ecliptic), the north and south lunar nodes. Despite being mathematical points rather than celestial bodies, they’re given the same weight as the other seven. Anyone who’s experienced a strong Rahu or Ketu dasha will tell you they’re anything but theoretical.
What each one governs
Surya (Sun): The soul, confidence, authority, father, government, and career status. A strong Sun in the chart gives natural leadership. A weak or afflicted Sun can show low confidence or troubled relations with authority figures.
Chandra (Moon): Mind, emotions, mother, and mental peace. The Moon’s position is so important that an entire parallel chart system (the Moon chart, or Chandra Kundli) is built from it. Your nakshatra is determined by the Moon’s exact position at birth.
Mangal (Mars): Courage, energy, siblings, property, and physical vitality. Mars in certain houses is what creates Mangal Dosha, one of the most checked factors in kundli matching.
Budh (Mercury): Intellect, communication, business sense, and analytical ability. Strong Mercury shows up in traders, writers, accountants, and anyone who works with numbers or words for a living.
Guru (Jupiter): Wisdom, dharma, teachers, children, and expansion. Jupiter is considered the most naturally benefic planet. Its placement often indicates where life gives you the most growth and good fortune.
Shukra (Venus): Love, marriage, beauty, luxury, and the arts. Venus governs the quality of partnerships and material comforts. A well-placed Venus doesn’t just mean a good marriage; it can indicate artistic talent, a taste for aesthetics, or financial comfort.
Shani (Saturn): Discipline, hard work, delays, karma, and the results of past actions. Saturn gets a bad reputation, but it’s the planet that rewards sustained effort. A Saturn dasha can be grueling but often produces the most lasting achievements.
Rahu: Obsession, worldly desire, unconventional paths, foreign connections. Rahu amplifies whatever it touches, sometimes to the point of excess. It can drive ambition but also illusion.
Ketu: Detachment, spirituality, past-life karma, and sudden insights. Ketu strips away attachment to whatever house it sits in. Uncomfortable, but often spiritually clarifying.
Position is what matters
Knowing what a planet governs is just the starting point. Which sign, house (counted from the Lagna), and nakshatra a planet sits in is what determines how its influence actually plays out. Mars in its own sign Aries behaves very differently from Mars debilitated in Cancer. Jupiter in the 5th house brings one kind of result; Jupiter in the 8th, a completely different one.
