Before the rashi (sign), the Moon’s exact position is identified through its nakshatra. The whole sky is divided into 27 of them. If the rashi tells you which room of the house you’re in, the nakshatra tells you exactly where you’re standing within that room.
Nakshatra vs rashi
A rashi spans 30 degrees, a nakshatra only 13 degrees 20 minutes. So a bit over two nakshatras fit inside one rashi. Nakshatra gives a finer-grained read.
Here’s a concrete example. Two people both have Moon in Karka (Cancer) rashi. But one has Moon at 5 degrees Cancer (Punarvasu nakshatra, ruled by Jupiter), and the other has Moon at 20 degrees Cancer (Ashlesha nakshatra, ruled by Mercury). Same rashi, very different personality signatures. The Punarvasu person tends to be optimistic and generous. The Ashlesha person is sharp, perceptive, and sometimes secretive. That precision is why traditional Vedic astrology cares so much about nakshatra.
Ashwini through Revati
Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati make up all 27, each with its own ruling planet and characteristics.
The 27 nakshatras are distributed across 9 ruling planets, so each planet rules exactly 3 nakshatras. Ketu rules Ashwini, Magha, and Mula. Venus rules Bharani, Purva Phalguni, and Purva Ashadha. The Sun rules Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, and Uttara Ashadha. And so on. This structure isn’t random. It creates repeating themes across the zodiac: the three Ketu nakshatras, for instance, all carry an energy of fresh starts and transformation, even though they fall in very different rashis (Mesha, Simha, and Dhanu).
What nakshatras are used for
In daily life, nakshatras show up more often than most people realize. The panchang lists the nakshatra of the day, and priests use it to determine auspicious timings for ceremonies. Baby naming traditionally follows the birth nakshatra, with each nakshatra assigned specific starting syllables. Nakshatras also play a central role in matchmaking. The Ashtakoot (8-point) compatibility system used in most North Indian kundli matching is built entirely on the bride’s and groom’s birth nakshatras, not their rashis.
For those living outside India, your birth nakshatra still connects you to the same traditions. When your parents ask a pandit for a muhurat for your wedding, the pandit uses your nakshatra. When a relative wants to know your child’s naming syllables after birth, nakshatra is the answer. Even the daily rashifal gains an extra layer of meaning once you know which nakshatra the Moon is transiting through on any given day.
