What is Panchang?
Panchang is the foundation of the Vedic calendar with five limbs: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (Moon's position), Yoga (Sun-Moon combination) and Karana (half tithi). Knowledge of all five is essential for any auspicious work.
Tithi
The angle between Moon and Sun; a new tithi every 12 degrees.
Vara
Day of the week; each day has a planetary ruler.
Nakshatra
Moon's current position among the 27 lunar mansions.
Yoga
Sum of the longitudes of Sun and Moon, divided into 27 parts.
Karana
Half a tithi — there are two karanas in each day.
