Among all the day’s muhurats, alongside Choghadiya and Rahu Kaal, Abhijit Muhurat is considered the most auspicious and the most reliable. If you’ve ever been told “just do it during Abhijit Muhurat,” now you know why. It’s the jyotish equivalent of a universal backup plan.
When Abhijit Muhurat falls
It falls right around the middle of the day, near local noon, and lasts roughly 48 minutes. It’s calculated as the eighth muhurat out of the 15 that split the period between sunrise and sunset.
Here’s the math behind it. Take the total daylight duration (sunrise to sunset), divide it into 15 equal parts, and the eighth slot is Abhijit Muhurat. So it’s not fixed at 12:00 PM. In summer, when days are longer, each slot stretches, so Abhijit might run from 11:48 AM to 12:36 PM. In winter, with shorter days, those same 15 slots compress, and Abhijit might be just 11:45 AM to 12:25 PM. The exact window shifts every single day and varies by your city’s latitude. Someone in Chennai and someone in London will have meaningfully different Abhijit windows on the same date.
This is why looking up “Abhijit Muhurat today” on a generic site and getting a time calculated for Delhi won’t help you if you’re sitting in Vancouver or Munich. The calculation has to use your city’s actual sunrise and sunset.
Why it’s considered so auspicious
Abhijit Muhurat is considered strong enough to override most doshas, which is why it’s treated as a reasonable time to begin something even when no other auspicious window is available. The name itself means “unconquered” (from the nakshatra Abhijit, associated with Lord Vishnu), and the tradition holds that any work started in this window carries a special protective quality.
This makes it especially useful for urgent situations. Say you need to sign a contract or start a journey, but the day’s panchang shows unfavorable yogas or a difficult tithi. If you can time it within the Abhijit window, the tradition says the muhurat’s strength compensates. It won’t override everything (a total eclipse or a specific planetary war, for instance, is a different matter), but for everyday auspiciousness, it’s the strongest daily window available.
Common uses
People commonly time these activities to Abhijit Muhurat when no other specific muhurat has been calculated:
- Starting a new business or opening a shop
- Beginning a journey, especially long-distance travel
- First use of a new vehicle
- Submitting an important application or document
- Starting a new medicine or treatment
- Initiating a significant phone call or negotiation
It’s not a substitute for a properly calculated muhurat for major life events like a wedding or griha pravesh. For those, a full muhurat calculation considering your birth chart is the right approach. But for everyday “when should I start this?” decisions, Abhijit Muhurat is the go-to.
One exception
Abhijit Muhurat isn’t counted on Wednesdays. That’s a specific exclusion in the shastras, not a general guideline. The reason given in classical texts is that Abhijit nakshatra’s energy conflicts with Mercury’s rulership of Wednesday. So if you’re planning something for a Wednesday, you’ll need to look at Choghadiya or another timing method instead.
