Before booking time with an astrologer to find out whether you’re Manglik, you can run a first-pass check yourself, provided you already have your birth chart’s house positions. It’s not complicated. You just need to count houses from three reference points and see where Mars sits.

Step 1: Identify three reference points

Note which house your ascendant (Lagna), Moon, and Venus each fall in. Manglik status is checked from each of these three separately. Most people only know about the Lagna check, but the Moon and Venus checks are equally important. Venus is specifically relevant because it’s the natural significator of marriage and relationships.

Step 2: Find Mars’s house

Now note which house Mars itself occupies. In a North Indian chart, the houses are arranged in a diamond pattern with the Lagna at the top. In a South Indian chart, it’s a grid with fixed signs. Either way, find Mars’s position.

Step 3: Count the houses

Counting from the ascendant, check whether Mars lands in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house. Repeat the same count from the Moon, then from Venus. If Mars lands in one of these houses from any of the three reference points, the chart is considered Manglik.

Let’s walk through an example. Say your Lagna is Aries (house 1), Moon is in Cancer (house 4), Venus is in Virgo (house 6), and Mars is in Scorpio (house 8). Counting from the Lagna (Aries): Mars in Scorpio is the 8th house. That’s one of the six Manglik houses, so the chart is Manglik from the Lagna. You’d still check from Moon and Venus, but one positive result from any reference point is enough.

Now here’s a subtlety many people miss. The sign Mars occupies matters too, not just the house number. Mars in its own signs (Aries, Scorpio) or in exaltation (Capricorn) is strong, and some traditions consider the dosha more significant in those placements. Mars debilitated in Cancer or in a friendly sign may produce a milder form.

Step 4: Repeat for both people

For marriage matching, this check needs to be done separately for both the groom and bride. If both turn out Manglik, tradition holds that the dosha cancels out mutually, a rule explained in full in the Manglik-to-Manglik marriage post.

Common cancellation rules to know

Even if Mars is in one of the six houses, certain conditions can cancel the dosha entirely:

  • Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) in the relevant house
  • Mars conjunct or aspected by Jupiter (a benefic influence)
  • Mars in the 2nd house in Gemini or Virgo
  • Mars in the 1st house in Aries, Leo, or Aquarius

These aren’t universal. Different traditions recognize different cancellations. But they’re worth knowing so you don’t panic at the first sign of Mars in a Manglik house.
