Manglik dosha (Mangal dosha) is one of the most-asked topics in Indian match-making, and also one of the most misunderstood. Families panic at the word “Manglik,” matrimonial profiles carry it as a red flag, and entire matches get rejected over it without checking whether the dosha actually applies in full. So let’s sort through what it really is, when it matters, and when it doesn’t.

It is counted separately from the 36 gunas, alongside the other doshas checked in kundli matching.

When Manglik dosha forms

When Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Lagna, the Moon, or Venus, the chart is considered Manglik. All three reference points are checked.

Why these six houses? Each one touches a critical area of married life. The 1st house governs the self, the 2nd governs family and finances, the 4th governs domestic happiness, the 7th is the house of the spouse directly, the 8th governs longevity and in-laws, and the 12th governs bed pleasures and expenses. Mars, being an aggressive and fiery planet, is considered disruptive when placed in these houses specifically because it can bring conflict, impatience, or dominance into areas where harmony is needed.

By this definition, roughly 50% of all charts have Mars in at least one of these six houses from at least one reference point. Half the population is technically Manglik. Which is exactly why the cancellation rules exist.

Cancellation rules (when it doesn’t apply)

Not all Manglik doshas are equal. Classical texts describe several conditions under which the dosha is considered cancelled or significantly weakened:

  • Mars in its own sign or exalted: If Mars sits in Aries, Scorpio (own signs), or Capricorn (exaltation) in one of those houses, many practitioners consider the dosha cancelled. A strong Mars handles its own energy.
  • Mars aspected by benefics: Jupiter’s aspect on Mars in the 7th or 8th house is a well-known cancellation. Saturn’s aspect is debated, but some traditions accept it.
  • Mars in certain nakshatras: Mars in Chitra, Dhanishta, or Mrigashira nakshatra in the offending house is considered weaker by some schools.
  • After age 28: A widely cited (though debated) tradition says Manglik dosha’s intensity reduces significantly after the native crosses 28, since Mars’s youthful aggression mellows with maturity. This isn’t universally accepted, but many families and astrologers do factor age in.
  • Both partners Manglik: The most common cancellation. If both the bride and groom have Manglik dosha, the energies are considered balanced, and the dosha is mutually cancelled.

Checking both charts

Matching looks at the Manglik status of both the groom and the bride. A common rule is that if both are Manglik, the dosha is considered mutually cancelled. This is why a Manglik flag on a single chart shouldn’t cause alarm on its own. The question is always: what does the other chart show?

A practical example: say a woman’s chart shows Mars in the 7th house from Lagna, but not from Moon or Venus. The man’s chart shows Mars in the 8th from Moon. Both are technically Manglik, so mutual cancellation applies. Without checking both charts and all reference points, they might have rejected a compatible match.

Separate from the score, but read together

Manglik status does not add into the 36 points of guna milan; it is shown as a separate flag so the picture stays clear. A couple could score 32 out of 36 on guna milan but still have a Manglik flag on one chart. That doesn’t invalidate the score. It means you need to check whether the dosha is cancelled before drawing conclusions.

The matrimonial-site problem

Most matrimonial websites ask a yes/no Manglik question in the profile. That binary doesn’t capture the reality. A chart with Mars in the 7th house in Capricorn (exalted, likely cancelled) and a chart with Mars in the 7th house in Cancer (debilitated, strong dosha) both show up as “Manglik: Yes.” The two situations are completely different. This is why running an actual kundli match with both birth details matters more than trusting a checkbox on a profile.
