Two questions usually come up first in numerology: “what is my Mulank?” and “what is my Bhagyank?” They measure different things, and confusing them is one of the most common mistakes people make when they first explore Indian numerology.
How Mulank is calculated
Mulank (the psychic number) comes only from the day of birth. If someone is born on the 23rd, 2+3=5, so the Mulank is 5. It doesn’t matter what month or year. The 23rd of January 1985 and the 23rd of November 2002 both give a Mulank of 5.
Mulank reflects your natural temperament, the way you instinctively react to situations, your first impulse. It also drives your lucky number and is the number most closely tied to your personality. People with Mulank 1 (born on 1st, 10th, 19th, or 28th) tend to be natural leaders, sometimes stubborn. Mulank 7 people (7th, 16th, 25th) are often introspective and drawn to research or spirituality.
How Bhagyank is calculated
Bhagyank (the destiny number) comes from the full date of birth: day, month, and year. All digits are summed and reduced to a single number. Take someone born on 15th August 1990: 1+5+0+8+1+9+9+0 = 33, then 3+3 = 6. Their Bhagyank is 6.
Because Bhagyank uses the full date, it encodes more information than Mulank. It reflects the life path and broader tendencies, the direction things tend to move in over time, especially as a person matures. Many practitioners say Mulank dominates until roughly age 35, after which Bhagyank becomes more prominent. Whether you agree with that precise cutoff or not, the idea is that your instinctive nature (Mulank) and your life’s larger arc (Bhagyank) can be quite different.
When Mulank and Bhagyank match
If both numbers are the same, the personality and the life direction are aligned. A person born on the 6th of a month whose full date also reduces to 6 has a reinforced Venus influence: strong in relationships, aesthetics, and comfort. This alignment tends to make the person’s path feel more natural, less internally conflicted.
When the two numbers are different, say Mulank 1 (Sun) and Bhagyank 8 (Saturn), there’s an internal tension. The person’s instinct is to charge ahead independently (Sun), but life keeps putting them in situations that demand patience, discipline, and working within structures (Saturn). That tension isn’t bad. It just means growth comes from integrating both energies, not choosing one over the other.
