Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 falls on September 14, a Monday, with the festival traditionally running ten days to Anant Chaturdashi. For families in the US, the date itself is fixed by the tithi, but the exact sthapana and visarjan timing needs to be computed for your own city.

General timing guidance

Sthapana (installing the idol) is traditionally done during the midday hours, on the Chaturthi tithi, avoiding Rahu Kaal and Bhadra. This guidance applies the same way in the US as in India, only the local Rahu Kaal window differs by city.

The preferred window is the Madhyahna period, roughly the middle third of the day between sunrise and sunset. In most US cities in mid-September, that falls somewhere between 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM local time, but it shifts based on your longitude. The key constraints: the Chaturthi tithi must be prevailing, and Rahu Kaal must not be running.

Sthapana puja essentials

For families doing the installation at home, the basics are straightforward: place the idol facing east or west, with a clean cloth underneath. Offer modak (Ganesha’s favorite), durva grass, red flowers, and kumkum. Light a diya and incense, then chant the Ganesh Atharvashirsha or at minimum “Om Ganeshaya Namah” 108 times. Sindoor is applied to the idol, and the first prasad is distributed after aarti.

In the US, finding fresh modak can be a challenge outside major metro areas. Many families make them at home with rice flour and jaggery-coconut filling. Some Indian grocery stores in cities like Edison, NJ or Sunnyvale, CA stock fresh modak during the season, so it’s worth checking a week ahead.

Visarjan timing

Visarjan happens 1.5, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days later depending on family or community tradition, most commonly the next afternoon or on Anant Chaturdashi itself. Many US temples and community associations set a single community visarjan date and time that individual families follow.

For 2026, the ten-day festival would place Anant Chaturdashi around September 23. But the 1.5-day visarjan (the most common for home pujas) would fall on September 15, Tuesday afternoon. Families who keep the idol for 5 days would do visarjan on September 19.

Visarjan practicalities in the US

In India, visarjan means immersing the idol in a river, lake, or the sea. In the US, that’s often not practical or environmentally permitted. Many families use a bucket or tub of water at home, dissolve the idol, and then pour the water into their garden. Eco-friendly clay idols (without chemical paint) dissolve cleanly and don’t harm the soil. US temples increasingly organize community visarjan events with large tubs set up specifically for this purpose.

Getting your city’s exact window

Check your city’s Rahu Kaal and Abhijit Muhurat on the muhurat page for both the sthapana and visarjan dates, and plan the ceremony outside Rahu Kaal.

One thing to avoid

Tradition is clear on one point: do not look at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi night. The Chaturthi Chandradarshan is considered inauspicious and is said to invite false accusations. Whether you take this literally or culturally, most families simply stay indoors after evening aarti on that first night.
